Ultrasound

An ultrasound is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses high-frequency sound waves. Images are produced in two dimensions (2D) and sometimes in three dimensions (3D) through a small probe moved over the body surface. A water-based gel is applied to the skin to better transmit the waves sent and received by the probe. Ultrasound provides a good evaluation of soft tissues. Ultrasound can also be used for targeting during a needle-based (sampling) biopsy of a lesion.
